What is the difference between DELF, TEF, and TCF?

Différence

The DELF: An Official and Permanent Diploma

  • Levels: From A1 to B2 (and the DALF for C1 and C2).

  • Validity: Lifetime (like a real diploma).

  • Special feature: Each diploma corresponds to a specific level. For example, if you take the DELF B2 and pass, you receive the B2 diploma only.

  • Common uses: Studying at a French-speaking university (B2 is often required), enhancing your CV, officially validating your French level.

The TCF: an official test, valid for 2 years

  • Levels: Result expressed from A1 to C2, depending on your performance.

  • Validity period: 2 years.

  • Specificity: No pass or fail. You are assigned a level according to your score.

  • Frequent use: Application for admission to a French university, French naturalization, academic mobility projects.

The TEF: an official test, valid for 2 years

  • Levels: As with the TCF, the result corresponds to a CEFR level (A1 to C2).

  • Validity period: 2 years.

  • Specificity: Designed for administrative procedures outside France, particularly in Canada (immigration, studies, naturalization).

  • Frequent use: Immigration to Canada (TEF Canada), obtaining Canadian citizenship, admission to certain Francophone institutions abroad.

What level do I need?

Starting in 2026, the required language levels for procedures in France will be as follows:

  • Naturalization: Level B2 required.

  • Resident card: Level B1 required.

  • Multi-year residence permit: Level A2 mandatory.

For studies, institutions generally require level B2 or C1.

In addition, to enhance your profile and increase your opportunities on the job market, it is recommended to reach at least level B1, which is recognized as sufficient to carry out professional activities.

Levels

What do A2, B2, C1 mean?

Learning French as a Foreign Language (FLE) is structured around six proficiency levels defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). These levels range from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).

The time required to reach each level varies depending on the regularity, intensity of the courses, and personal practice. Below is an average estimate:

  • A1 – Beginner: about 70 to 100 hours

  • A2 – Elementary: about 150 to 200 hours

  • B1 – Intermediate: about 300 to 400 hours

  • B2 – Upper intermediate: about 500 to 600 hours

  • C1 – Advanced: about 700 to 800 hours

  • C2 – Mastery: about 1,000 hours or more
